Dusky Pink Overdyed Runner
This dusky pink overdyed runner measures 285 x 71 cm and is made of wool. A central medallion in blue grey sits in the middle of a dusky pink field, with two smaller medallions toward each end and sprigs of flowers running between them. It is a vintage runner, over-dyed in dusky pink, so the design looks soft and light.
The design up close
The central medallion of this dusky pink overdyed runner is blue grey, with a lobed outline in dark grey and a pink orange centre that holds a ring of small dots. Flowers in pink, cream and green sit around its edge. Two smaller medallions in pale grey blue and cream sit toward each end, linked to the centre by sprigs of leaves and flowers.
The field is dusky pink, with flowers and leafy sprigs in grey, green, cream and pink scattered across it. Pale sprigs reach into the corners, so the eye moves from one medallion to the next. The sprigs are drawn with fine grey lines, which keep them light against the pink.
The border is cream and yellow green, with a dark grey stripe inside it. Pink and purple flowers run along the border, and the corners carry larger green and cream scrolls. The darker stripe keeps the pale edge crisp against the pink.
Why this dusky pink overdyed runner looks soft
Over-dyeing has given the runner its soft, light look. Vintage runners like this one are shaved back and then over-dyed to intensify the design. Here the pink softens the whole piece, while the blue grey medallion and grey green sprigs stay visible. Like other overdyed rugs and vintage rugs, the shading varies a little across the field.
How a dusky pink overdyed runner is made
Our records note that this runner is hand double knotted from wool. Because it has been shaved, its surface is low and even, which suits a hallway where people walk daily. The over-dye was used to intensify the design of the runner.
Sizing it for your hallway
At 285 x 71 cm the runner covers about 2.0 square metres. A dusky pink overdyed runner at this width suits a hallway about 90 to 110 cm wide, with roughly 10 to 20 cm of floor showing on each side. A dusky pink runner can also sit beside a bed, with its length following the bed.
Its length also suits a kitchen galley, where you walk the same path each day. Because the field is pale, a runner like this one can sit against darker timber and still show its medallions clearly.
Looking after your runner
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it end to end every six to twelve months so foot traffic wears it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the runner sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a runner under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
