Dark Blue Overdyed Rug
This dark blue overdyed rug measures 483 x 325 cm and is made of wool. Its field is a slate blue with darker navy toward the edges, and a faint medallion and floral pattern show through the colour across the centre. It is a vintage piece, shaved back and over-dyed in dark blue, so the design reads as soft shapes.
The design up close
A faint medallion sits in the centre of this dark blue overdyed rug, with lighter blue patterns showing through the darker field around it. The shapes read as soft, blurred outlines rather than crisp drawing.
The border is darker, a navy blue with paler blue floral sprays and curling scrolls. Narrow bands separate the border from the field, and the scrolls read more clearly than the centre, where the colour is more even.
Lighter streaks run across the field in places, where the surface has worn. They show the age of the rug without spoiling the overall colour.
What the dark blue overdyed rug does
Over-dyeing gives an older rug one strong colour. Here the dark blue sits over an existing pattern, so the medallion and floral shapes show through softly and stand out less than they would on a plain ground. Like other vintage rugs and overdyed rugs, it has a deep, even look from a distance. Its colour is the first thing you notice, and the pattern comes second.
How a dark blue overdyed rug is made
Our records note that this rug is hand double knotted from wool. At 483 x 325 cm it is a rug for a large room. The over-dye sits across the whole field, so the colour is even from one end of the rug to the other, apart from the lighter streaks.
Sizing it for your room
At 483 x 325 cm this dark blue overdyed rug covers about 15.7 square metres, a size for a large living room or open-plan space. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m fits along the 483 cm length, with roughly 132 cm of rug showing at each end. A dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, leaves roughly 122 cm at each end and 113 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back without leaving the rug.
Because it is so large, the sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table can all sit on it together.
The deep blue suits cream walls, timber floors and neutral furniture. Blue works well with plain walls and timber, where the rug stands out without competing with the furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
