Cream Vintage Overdyed Rug
This Cream Vintage Overdyed Rug is an aged piece that has been overdyed, measuring 405 x 305 cm, or about 12.4 square metres. Its worn field is olive and khaki with grey and pale patches, and the faded border is sage and taupe with small flower rosettes. The worn pile and softened colour give it a weathered look that suits relaxed rooms.
The design up close
The field looks almost plain at first. Working closer, faint sprigs and small flower forms show across the ground in rows, with a soft lighter band through the middle where the wear is greatest. The design is there, but it has softened into a quiet, faded texture.
The border is the clearest part of this Cream Vintage Overdyed Rug. Rosette shapes in faded cream and pink beige sit along the outer band on a sage and olive ground, with small leafy scrolls between them. The inner guard band is narrower and darker, and it marks the edge of the field.
The light and dark streaks across the field are part of the aged finish. They change how the olive ground reads from one side of the room to the other, so the rug looks different in morning light and in the evening.
How this Cream Vintage Overdyed Rug is made
Our records note that it is hand double knotted in wool. Overdyeing is used on aged rugs to intensify the design and patterns, and this cream vintage overdyed rug has the softened, distressed look that the process leaves behind.
The wear has taken the pile down low across the field, so the knots no longer stand up as they once did. That worn surface is what gives the piece its character, and the border still shows more of its original detail than the centre.
Sizing this Cream Vintage Overdyed Rug
At 405 x 305 cm this Cream Vintage Overdyed Rug covers about 12.4 square metres, enough for a large living room or dining room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits with about 93 cm of rug beyond each end, so the front legs of the sofa and of armchairs set facing it can rest on it.
For a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, the rug leaves about 83 cm at each end and about 103 cm along each side. The olive and sage tones suit timber floors, warm grey furnishings and rooms with a relaxed, lived in feel.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not catch the worn surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Because the pile is worn low on this vintage piece, avoid dragging furniture across it and lift chairs rather than sliding them.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off what remains of the pile. Moths favour dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
