Cream Vintage Neshaboor Rug
This cream vintage Neshaboor rug is hand double knotted in wool and measures 390 x 293 cm. Its field is a faded cream that leans toward grey and taupe, with a large dark medallion at the centre, and a rust red border carries small cream, gold and blue rosettes.
The design up close
A large medallion in dark grey brown sits at the centre of the cream field. Its outline is lobed and scalloped, with a lighter motif at its heart and small cream and blue flowers around it. It is the largest shape on the rug, and the other motifs arrange themselves around it.
The corners of the field hold darker spandrels in grey brown with pale flower sprigs. Between them, small pink and green flower motifs are scattered across the ground, and fine curling stems link the shapes together.
The main border is rust red, with a row of small cream, gold, blue and dark rosettes along its length. Narrow dark brown lines separate it from the field, and a thin cream line runs at the outer edge. The rosettes sit at regular intervals along the border, so the edge reads as a steady band.
How a cream vintage Neshaboor rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the wool forms a short, worn pile across the field. Vintage rugs show their age in softened colour and worn areas, and this one has both across the field and the centre. The colour has faded unevenly across the field, which is typical of an aged piece.
Colour in your room
A cream vintage Neshaboor rug suits lighter living rooms with timber or pale floors. The grey brown medallion and the rust border add warmth without heavy colour. Pale walls and grey or rust cushions sit well with it. The cream field works with the rust border, so the two colours sit together without competing.
Sizing it for your room
At 390 x 293 cm this cream vintage Neshaboor rug covers about 11.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 85 cm of rug showing past each end, and two armchairs can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves about 75 cm at each end and 96.5 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back. The pale field also lifts a dining room with darker timber furniture. Its 390 cm length also suits a long living room where the sofa runs along one wall. Vintage rugs of this size work well as the main rug in a lounge.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
