Cream Vintage Mashad Rug
This cream vintage Mashad rug is hand double knotted from wool and made in Mashad, Iran. It measures 385 x 286 cm, or about 11.0 square metres. Its field is a faded peach and rose with a cream wash over much of the ground, so it reads as a soft, aged rug in a warm, muted palette.
The design up close
A small star-shaped medallion in blue and cream sits at the centre of this cream vintage Mashad rug, surrounded by faded motifs in tan, grey and brown. Blue scalloped outlines run along the sides and lower edge of the field, giving the ground a framed look. The motifs are spaced out rather than packed tightly, so the field keeps an open feel despite its size.
The outer borders are sand and khaki, with floral vines and small rosettes set between thin inner bands in blue and cream. Wear across this cream vintage Mashad rug has faded the strongest colours first, so the rose and blue show through in patches while the sand border keeps more of its detail.
Colour and where it suits
The colours sit between peach and cream, so this cream vintage Mashad rug works best where the light is warm. Timber floors, linen sofas and natural fibres all pick up its tones. Blue-grey cushions or a navy armchair bring out the blue in the outlines and medallion. Because the palette is soft, it suits both modern and traditional rooms, and it looks at home beside plain walls and simple furniture.
How this cream vintage Mashad rug is made
This cream vintage Mashad rug is hand double knotted, which means each knot is tied by hand and secured around two warp threads. The pile has worn back over the years, so the rug feels thinner underfoot than a new one and the colours are softer. Wool is resilient, and the pile still holds its shape in the areas that have not worn through.
Sizing it for your room
At 385 x 286 cm, this cream vintage Mashad rug covers about 11.0 square metres, which suits a large lounge or a formal dining room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 83 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 73 cm at each end and about 93 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back.
The rug is large enough that a sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table can all sit on it together.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
