Cream Vaziri Rug
This cream Vaziri rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool and measures 233 x 177 cm. Its cream field is covered with octagons in red, rust, blue and orange, each holding a small medallion.
The design up close
The field holds rows of octagons, seven down the length and four across, in red, rust, blue, orange and dark teal. Between the octagons, small cross-shaped rosettes in red and blue fill the gaps, and the cream ground keeps the repeat open.
Each octagon has its own colour mix, so the field looks lively rather than mechanical. The border is cream, with rows of small geometric flowers in red, blue and rust set between narrow guard stripes.
This cream Vaziri rug has a clear repeat that reads well from a doorway, with the detail appearing as you walk closer. Between the rows, the cream ground gives the eye room to rest, so the colours of the octagons look brighter.
Afghan rugs and their weaving
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and the Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and that is how this rug was made.
How a cream Vaziri rug is made
Because the pile is knotted by hand, the outline of each octagon is formed by knots rather than printed on the surface, and the design appears on the back as well as the front. Our records note natural dyes.
A cream knotted rug like this is built knot by knot, so the lines are made by the pile itself.
Sizing it for your room
This cream Vaziri rug at 233 x 177 cm covers about 4.1 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m is almost as long as the rug, so the sofa’s front legs can sit on it, with armchairs facing it resting their front legs on the rug too.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm it leaves about 27 cm at each end and about 44 cm along each side, so chairs at the ends would sit partly on it. It suits a living room with pale floors best.
At the foot of a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide, a rug of this length leaves about 40 cm of rug showing on each side, so the octagons can be seen from the end of the bed. The octagons sit in straight rows, so the eye follows the repeat down the length of the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this cream Vaziri rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
