Cream Sarasar Kazak Rug
This cream Sarasar Kazak rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 208 x 148 cm. Three large medallions stack down the centre of a grey-taupe field, with salmon pink and blue at the top and bottom and a cream medallion between them. A cream border with blue, pink and gold rosettes frames the rug.
The design of this cream Sarasar Kazak rug
The top and bottom medallions are salmon pink, built as diamonds with blue centres and outlined in pale blue and white. The middle medallion is cream, with a navy and purple star at its heart and small blue and gold motifs on each side. Blue and gold rosettes sit beside all three, so the centre reads as a tidy column.
On this cream Sarasar Kazak rug, small crosses, diamonds and stars in orange and blue fill the grey-taupe ground between the medallions. Along the sides, rows of cream and blue rosettes run from top to bottom. The ground is quiet enough that the salmon and blue medallions stand out clearly.
The border has several bands. The outer band is cream with small blue, pink and gold rosettes, and inside it a narrow line of small red and pink motifs separates the band from the field. Near the ends the blue and pink rosettes alternate, and the outer rows of small blue medallions run the length of the rug on each side.
Where Kazak designs come from
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, so the old medallions live on in this cream Sarasar Kazak rug.
How it is made
This cream Sarasar Kazak rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool. Each medallion is built from knots tied by hand, so the diamond edges are a little uneven, as hand knotting leaves them.
Sizing it for your room
At 208 x 148 cm this cream Sarasar Kazak rug covers about 3.1 square metres. It is sized for a seating group rather than a dining table. Set it so the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs rest on it around a coffee table, with the middle medallion facing the seats. Pale timber floors and neutral walls let the salmon and blue medallions stand out.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
