Cream Overdyed Tabriz Rug
This cream overdyed Tabriz rug was hand double knotted in wool and measures 385 x 275 cm, which gives it about 10.6 square metres of floor. Its field is a soft tan and camel, worked with small pale blue and ivory blossoms, and a wide navy border with cream medallions frames the whole rug. It is a vintage piece that has been overdyed, and the blue in its border links the field to the edge.
The design up close
The field is covered in a close, even pattern of small flowers and leaves set in rows that run the length of the rug. The motifs are pale blue, ivory and dusty green, and they stand out against the tan ground. Some blossoms have faded more than others, so the field looks mottled in places rather than solid.
The blossoms are spaced evenly across the tan ground, with small gaps of plain colour between them, so the ground shows clearly between the motifs.
The border is the strongest part of the design. A wide navy band carries cream cartouches with small floral and geometric motifs in blue, and a narrow cream band sits inside it. The blue in the border picks up the blue blossoms across the field, so the colours link from the centre to the edge of this cream overdyed Tabriz rug.
Narrow cream and sage guard lines run along the outer edge of the navy band, and an inner cream band separates the navy from the field. The guard lines are thin enough that they read as a finish rather than a second border.
What overdyeing does to a vintage rug
Vintage rugs like this one are aged, shaved to a lower pile, and overdyed to intensify the design and patterns. Our records note that this rug is hand double knotted. The overdye is what gives this cream overdyed Tabriz rug its tan field.
Sizing a cream overdyed Tabriz rug for your room
At 385 x 275 cm this cream overdyed Tabriz rug suits a large living room or a formal dining room. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 83 cm of rug at each end, enough for the front legs of the sofa and armchairs to rest on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, the rug leaves about 73 cm at each end and 88 cm along each side. Its tan field and navy border suit timber floors and pale walls. A pale sofa lets the tan field show clearly, and the navy border makes a strong edge.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
