Cream Khorjin Rug
This cream Khorjin rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 256 x 176 cm. Its cream ground carries bands of red, gold, green and navy geometric figures, with multicoloured tassels at both short ends.
The design up close
The field of this cream Khorjin rug is laid out in horizontal bands. Rows of large diamond medallions in red, gold, rust and blue grey run across the top and bottom, and smaller motifs in red, green, navy and cream fill the bands between them.
The ground is cream and tan, which lets the red and gold stand out. Multicoloured tassels finish both short ends. The medallions in the top and bottom bands are the largest figures, and the small motifs between them give the rug its texture.
The bands alternate, so the field has no single focal point and the pattern carries from one end of the rug to the other. Along the long sides the bands run parallel to the edge, so the rug reads as a set of stripes you can see from the doorway.
From saddlebag to rug
A Khorjin is a pair of woven bags joined together and carried over a horse or donkey, traditionally decorated with geometric patterns. Today’s Khorjin rugs take up that look across the whole field, often in many colours.
Our Khorjin rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan. Their busy, colourful patterns bring energy to a room, so Khorjin rugs suit hallways, children’s rooms, family rooms and runners for stairs and corridors.
How it is made
Thick, hard-wearing wool gives this cream Khorjin rug its pile, and each knot is tied by hand on a loom. Our records note natural dyes.
Turn the rug over and the design shows clearly on the back, with slight irregularities in the knots.
Thick, hard-wearing wool wears well in a room with heavy foot traffic, which is why rugs like this suit entrances.
Sizing your cream Khorjin rug
At 256 x 176 cm the rug covers about 4.5 square metres. In a living room the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it would show about 8 cm past each end and about 38 cm along each side, so the chairs would sit partly off the rug. A cream Khorjin rug this size suits a family room.
With 4.5 square metres of pattern, a cream Khorjin rug defines a whole living area on its own. The furniture can be arranged around the bands, so the rug becomes the anchor for the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
