Cream Bakhtiar Tribal Rug
This cream Bakhtiar tribal rug was double hand knotted in Iran from wool and measures 298 x 223 cm, which is about 6.6 square metres. Our records note vegetable dyes. Its compartments are mostly brown, olive and rust, with cream in the border and in the lighter compartments.
The cream Bakhtiar tribal rug up close
The field is a grid of about five columns and nine rows of square compartments, each framed in fine brown lines. Each compartment holds a small scene: a deer or other animal, a bird, a vase of flowers, or a bush with blossoms. The grounds change from one square to the next, between cream, tan, rust and olive.
The border is cream and ivory with brown and rust scrolls, flowers and leaves, set between narrow brown guard stripes. A rust band runs around the outer edge, and a short fringe finishes both ends.
Persian rugs from Iran
Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months. This rug is made from wool.
Many bakhtiar rugs use compartment designs like this one, and the grid of small pictures is what gives this cream bakhtiar tribal rug its garden character. Persian rug and Persian carpet mean the same thing: a rug hand knotted in Iran.
How it is made
Each knot in this cream Bakhtiar tribal rug is tied by hand, and the pile is double hand knotted. The animals and flowers are built up knot by knot, so each scene is formed by hand.
A rug of this size can take a weaver many months to finish. The compartments are built up row by row, so each animal, bird and flower is placed by the weaver rather than printed.
Sizing it for your room
At 298 x 223 cm, this cream Bakhtiar tribal rug covers about 6.6 square metres. Under a 2.2 m three-seat sofa it leaves about 39 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa and two armchairs can sit on it around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of 180 x 90 cm for six leaves about 59 cm at each end and 67 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back. A larger table of 240 x 100 cm would leave only about 29 cm at each end, so the chairs would sit partly off the rug. Cream and brown suit timber floors and warm, neutral walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
