Cream Abstract Wool Rug
This cream abstract wool rug is made from New Zealand wool and measures 295 x 198 cm. Its painted look comes from irregular shapes in sage green, blue grey, navy and brown laid over a sand beige ground. At about 5.8 square metres it suits a living room or a bedroom.
The design up close
The rug has no border and no repeated motif. Blotches and streaks of sage green and blue grey fill the top third, with a pale gold patch near the top centre. The lower half is mostly sand beige, broken by brown horizontal streaks that run across the rug. The sand ground is the largest area of colour, so it sets the warmth of the whole rug.
Navy blue marks are scattered through the middle and right side, some as small dots and others as thin strokes that trace the shapes around them. A few thin vertical lines also cut through the design, which adds to the look of brushwork rather than a printed image.
The fringe at the top and bottom ends is short and plain. From across a room this cream abstract wool rug reads as soft colour, which suits a room with plain upholstery.
Made from all wool
This cream abstract wool rug is made from all wool, and the New Zealand fibre gives its surface a soft, plush feel. The colours sit close together, so the design stays calm and never looks sharp.
Sizing a cream abstract wool rug in your home
At 295 x 198 cm the rug covers about 5.8 square metres. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves roughly 58 cm at each end and 54 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back. In a living room, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 38 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa sits well inside the edge. A rug of this size also keeps a sofa and two armchairs together, which helps in a room with a lot of open floor.
The sand, sage and navy tones suit timber floors, pale walls and grey or blue furnishings, so a cream abstract wool rug in this palette sits calmly in a room.
Looking after your cream abstract wool rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not catch on the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes wool rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Where the rug works best
Its loose design and soft colours suit a sitting room with plain furniture, where the rug can be the only pattern in view. A hallway is a less natural choice for a piece this abstract, because the design gives no clear direction for the eye to follow along the floor.
