Cedar Brown Pine Tree Rug
This cedar brown pine tree rug is double hand knotted in Afghanistan, in wool, and measures 413 x 303 cm, about 12.5 square metres. Its deep brown ground is crossed by fine stems in ochre, cream, blue and red, with small pinkish red flowers here and there, so the colour is warm and rich rather than plain.
The design of this cedar brown pine tree rug
Tall, branching stems rise through the field, with small blossoms and leaves at the ends of their branches. Down the centre, a vertical column of tree-like forms runs from the lower field to the top, flanked by elongated motifs in ochre and cream. The stems are fine and close, so the pattern reads as a dense, intricate network rather than a few large shapes.
The border of this cedar brown pine tree rug is a wide plain brown band with a narrow stripe, and an inner border of small flowers and red and ochre motifs frames the field. The pattern does not run into the border, so the field and the frame read as separate parts. In the corners, small floral motifs in red, ochre and blue sit where the stems thin out.
Afghan rugs and their weaving
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and some of the rugs made there today use hand-spun wool and natural dyes, which give them soft, lively colour. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. A room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months, and this rug, at about 12.5 square metres, is that size.
How it is made
This cedar brown pine tree rug is double hand knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on the loom and the pile is trimmed level afterwards. Our records note vegetable dyes. The brown ground and the ochre, cream and red stems come from the same earthy range of colour, so the pattern holds together across the whole field.
Sizing it for your room
At 413 x 303 cm this cedar brown pine tree rug covers about 12.5 square metres. Under a sofa of around 2.2 m, about 96 cm of rug shows past each end, so a full lounge setting fits on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug shows roughly 86 cm at each end and 101 cm along each side.
For a table of about 180 x 90 cm with six chairs, the margins grow to about 116 cm at each end and 106 cm along each side. This cedar brown pine tree rug suits cream or pale grey walls, timber floors and simple furniture in soft tones.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
