Blue Vintage Overdyed Rug
This blue vintage overdyed rug is hand double knotted and made from wool, measuring 390 x 287 cm, about 11.2 square metres. The whole field is a faded grey-blue, with cream and beige sprigs and a few patches of brighter blue showing through, so the colour looks softened rather than bright.
The design of this blue vintage overdyed rug
A large oval medallion sits in the centre of the field, pale and softly outlined, with floral sprigs spreading out around it. The sprigs are cream and white, with small leaves and blossoms that branch toward the corners, and smaller flower shapes repeat across the upper and lower parts of the field. A few blue patches sit among them.
The border is a wide band that frames the field, with a narrow guard stripe inside it. Its pattern is hard to pick out because the colours have faded close to the ground, but scrolling shapes show faintly along the sides. Wear is uneven across the rug: some areas look lighter and others darker, and the edges look softened.
A faded finish for calm rooms
The faded finish gives this overdyed rug a quiet, lived-in look rather than a crisp one. Its muted grey-blue and cream ground sits well with both modern and traditional furniture. Because the colours are soft, the sprigs and medallion read as texture from a distance and as clear shapes up close.
Each overdyed rug has its own pattern of fading, so the balance of blue and cream in this one is part of what makes it distinct.
How it is made
This blue vintage overdyed rug is hand double knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on the loom and the pile is trimmed afterwards. It is made from wool, which is resilient and springs back under foot, so the pile recovers after people walk over it.
Sizing it for your room
At 390 x 287 cm the rug covers about 11.2 square metres. Under a sofa of around 2.2 m, about 85 cm of rug shows past each end, so a full lounge setting fits on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug shows roughly 75 cm at each end and about 94 cm along each side.
For a table of about 180 x 90 cm with six chairs, the margins grow to about 105 cm at each end and about 99 cm along each side. This blue vintage overdyed rug suits pale timber, white walls and soft neutral furniture, where the faded colours sit comfortably beside each other.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
