Blue Tabriz Mahi Rug
This blue Tabriz Mahi rug is made in Iran from wool and measures 288 x 205 cm. It covers about 5.9 square metres. Its dark navy field is covered in tiny floral motifs, with a rust-red medallion at the centre and a rust border with cream motifs.
The design up close
The navy field is set with rows of small motifs in red, cream, orange and pale blue, so the ground looks busy and textured from a short distance. At the centre, a rust-red medallion with a cream outline is flanked on each side by a small red flower, which draws the eye to the middle. The cream outlines on the medallion and spandrels pick out their shapes, so the design reads well from across the room.
The four corners of this blue Tabriz Mahi rug are rust spandrels with pale cream and yellow diagonal lines, each with a small cream motif in the corner. Around them, a wide rust border carries small cream rosettes and diamond shapes, set between narrow purple guard lines on the inside and outside edges.
Up close, the motifs are not all the same. Some look like small flowers and others like tiny buds, so the pattern rewards a closer look.
The colours in this rug
On this blue Tabriz Mahi rug, the navy ground is the main colour, and the small red, cream and orange motifs scatter across it. The rust border is the warmest band on the rug, and it sits around the navy field like a frame.
Sizing this blue Tabriz Mahi rug for your room
At 288 x 205 cm this blue Tabriz Mahi rug covers about 5.9 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 34 cm of rug past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, the rug leaves about 54 cm at each end and about 58 cm along each side, so the chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled back.
Pale walls and timber floors let the dark navy field stand out. Because the design has no single centre, you can place the rug in any part of the room and it still reads well. A rug of this size fits a living room with a two-seat sofa and two armchairs, or a dining room with a table for six.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath this blue Tabriz Mahi rug. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then. Dark rugs show dust and lint more than pale ones, so a soft brush helps between vacuuming.
