Blue Persian Vintage Rug
This blue Persian vintage rug is a vintage piece, hand double knotted in wool, and it measures 379 x 293 cm. Its field is sage and pale grey green, with cream and olive tones. The overdye left a faded, streaked finish, which gives the rug a soft, worn look.
The design up close
The field of this blue Persian vintage rug is covered in a fine lattice of tiny diamonds and dots in sage and cream. Stripes of lighter and darker tone run diagonally across it in chevron shapes, most visibly on the left. At the centre a large diamond medallion in olive and khaki sits within a slightly darker outline. Its straight edges and points give the medallion a crisp shape against the softer lattice around it.
Two borders frame the field. The outer band is wide and sage, with a small diamond lattice repeated in khaki and cream. A narrow grey green band with a chain pattern sits between it and the field, so the field reads as a framed panel.
Up close the surface is worn and streaked, with patches where the overdye has faded. From across a room the lattice and chevrons soften into one muted tone.
Vintage and overdyed: what the finish means
Vintage rugs are older pieces, and overdyed rugs are dyed again to intensify their design. Our records note over-dyeing for this blue Persian vintage rug, which brings out its patterns. The worn streaks add to its softened, lived-in look. A mid tone like sage hides everyday marks more easily than white or cream.
How a blue Persian vintage rug is made
Our records note hand double knotting, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom. The rug is wool and measures 379 x 293 cm. It covers about 11.1 square metres of floor, so a rug this size needs a clear, level area.
Sizing it for your room
At 379 x 293 cm the rug covers about 11.1 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 80 cm of rug showing past each end, and the 293 cm depth leaves room for a coffee table in front of the sofa.
A blue Persian vintage rug this size suits a dining room. A table of about 240 x 100 cm for eight leaves roughly 70 cm of rug at each end and 97 cm along each side. The sage ground suits pale timber, cream walls and soft neutral furniture, where the olive medallion stands out.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
