Blue Persian Overdyed Rug
This blue Persian overdyed rug is hand double knotted wool, measuring 320 x 228 cm, or about 7.3 square metres. A cornflower blue over-dye covers the whole rug, with the design drawn in grey-olive lines and a lobed medallion at its centre. The field and border carry the same grey-olive drawing, so the rug reads as one connected piece.
The design of this blue Persian overdyed rug up close
An elongated medallion sits in the centre, with a rim of grey-olive scrolls and a middle filled with round rosettes in blue and grey. Its pointed ends draw the eye first.
Around it, the field of this blue Persian overdyed rug carries scrolls, leaves and small flowers in grey-olive, spread across the blue ground. Darker blue patches show through in places, so the colour is not flat anywhere on the rug.
The border is a band of small grey-olive motifs with a narrow stripe on either side. Its outer edge is quieter than the field, so the medallion stays the strongest shape on the rug. The border’s motifs repeat along each side, and the corners hold smaller floral shapes.
How it is made
Our records note that this blue Persian overdyed rug is hand double knotted from wool. Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the rug was then over-dyed in blue, which gives it a cooler tone.
Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves.
Colour in your room
The cool blue tone of this blue Persian overdyed rug suits grey and white walls and timber floors. Its grey-olive details echo neutral furniture, so the rug sits well beside grey or cream upholstery. A cream sofa and white walls let the blue field stand out, while timber floors add warmth to the grey-olive details.
Sizing it for your room
This blue Persian overdyed rug covers about 7.3 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits on a rug this long, with about 50 cm showing past each end. The rug is wide enough for a sofa and a pair of armchairs to sit around a coffee table on it.
In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 70 cm of rug at each end and 69 cm along each side, so chairs can slide back without leaving the rug. For a table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 40 cm at each end and 64 cm along each side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
