Blue Overdyed Tabriz Rug
This blue overdyed Tabriz rug is a vintage piece measuring 404 x 285 cm. Our records note hand double knotting in wool. Its field is a pale tan and grey beige, and the blue shows mainly in the thin frame lines and small motifs, so the rug reads more tan than blue.
The design up close
The field is covered with small flowers, leaves and vine stems in faded blue grey, tan and ivory. A faint medallion shape sits near the centre, though it is hard to read because the tones sit so close together. Uneven patches of lighter and darker colour run over the surface, so the field looks different from one area to the next.
A narrow blue grey line frames the field. The outer border is wider and sage tan, with small blue and ivory rosettes and star shapes spaced along it, and a thin blue grey guard runs at the edge. The border is where the blue reads most clearly. The inner frame and the outer border are the only places where the blue is strong enough to read as a separate colour.
Colour and wear
This blue overdyed Tabriz rug has a flat, muted look overall. The colours are soft, and the pattern shows as gentle texture rather than strong contrast. Vintage rugs of this type work as a background, with the design coming through quietly. In a pale room with timber floors, the tan and grey beige become the main colour, and the blue lines add a quiet edge.
The worn patches are part of the rug’s present look. Where the surface is thinnest, the tan shows through the blue, and the lighter areas sit next to darker ones across the centre.
How a blue overdyed Tabriz rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom. The rug is over-dyed, which means it has been dyed again over its original colour, and the tones look layered and uneven. Vintage rugs carry their own wear, and this one shows worn patches and lighter areas across the field.
Sizing it for your room
At 404 x 285 cm this blue overdyed Tabriz rug covers about 11.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 92 cm of rug showing past each end, and two armchairs can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves about 82 cm at each end and 92.5 cm along each side. Overdyed rugs like this one suit dining rooms with pale or grey furniture. The pale tones also sit easily on darker floors, so the rug does not have to match the timber.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
