Blue Overdyed Kerman Rug
This blue overdyed Kerman rug is a vintage, hand knotted piece from Iran, measuring 380 x 290 cm, or about 11.0 square metres. Its pale blue-grey ground and faded beige medallion give it a soft, washed look, and it is made in wool.
The design up close
A tall medallion sits at the centre, with a cusped outline that widens at the middle and reaches points at the top and bottom. Its pale blue body is filled with a fine, close pattern of small motifs, and a darker diamond-shaped panel in pale gold-beige sits inside it.
Around the medallion the field is a muted beige and taupe, with faint, scattered motifs and vertical lines near the edges. Small dark blue flecks show across the surface. The blue of the medallion and the beige of the field sit close in tone, and across this blue overdyed Kerman rug the two areas blend at the edges.
The border is hard to pick out in this photo, but faint pattern runs along the outer edges, with pale beige lines near both sides. It reads as a quiet frame rather than a strong second design.
Kerman and Persian weaving
This piece takes its name from Kerman and is an Iranian rug. Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, and a larger piece can take a weaver many months. At 11 square metres, this blue overdyed Kerman rug is a large piece.
How it is made
This blue overdyed Kerman rug is double hand knotted in wool. Turn the rug over and you can read the design on the back, with small irregularities where the knots were tied by hand.
Sizing your blue overdyed Kerman rug
At 380 x 290 cm this blue overdyed Kerman rug covers about 11.0 square metres, which makes it a room-size piece for a large living room or lounge. With a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, roughly 80 cm of rug shows past each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
For a dining room, an eight-seat table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 70 cm at each end and 95 cm along each side. A six-seat table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 100 cm at each end and each side. Vintage rugs at this size suit a large room with pale furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
