Blue Mahal Persian Runner
This blue Mahal Persian runner is hand knotted in Iran and measures 425 x 88 cm, which gives it about 3.7 square metres of floor. Its midnight blue field carries a long band of cream and gold vines, with pale blue flowers and rosettes, and a red border runs along both sides. It is a long, narrow rug suited to a passage or a space that needs one clear line. The pattern is dense, so the flowers fill most of the field and leave little plain navy.
The design up close
The field of this blue Mahal Persian runner is midnight blue, with a long central design of cream and gold flowers running along its length. Pale blue blossoms and small rosettes fill the spaces, and red-pink flowers add warmth at intervals.
The border is red, with narrow cream and blue grey lines and small motifs in cream, blue and green. The red sits against the navy field and makes the edge stand out, and the thin cream line keeps the two colours from running together.
The motifs change in size along the length, with larger rosettes near the middle and another toward the far end, so the runner has a slow rhythm from one end to the other.
The left end of this blue Mahal Persian runner has more cream vine work and blue dotted flowers, while the right end has pinker blossoms and smaller blue motifs. Along each long side, a thin cream line sits closest to the navy field, and a row of small cream and blue motifs runs inside the red border.
Persian rugs and where they are made
Every Persian rug in our collection was hand knotted in Iran. Our Persian rug range includes Tabriz, Kashan, Heriz and Hamedan styles, and this blue Mahal Persian runner belongs to the same Persian group. Persian rugs are woven one knot at a time on a loom. Our showroom has Persian rugs and Persian carpets for sale in a range of sizes and styles, and seeing a runner in person is the best way to judge its colour and its fineness.
Sizing a blue Mahal Persian runner for your hallway
At 425 x 88 cm this runner is about 4.25 m long and suits a hallway. For a hallway, allow about 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side of the runner, so a hallway about 108 to 128 cm wide suits it. Its length runs most of the way down a hallway, and the runner also works in a kitchen galley or beside a bed. A runner this length leaves the floor visible at both ends, which keeps the hallway open.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile.
