Blue Grey Overdyed Rug
This blue grey overdyed rug is a transitional design made from handspun wool. It measures 309 x 200 cm, about 6.2 square metres. Its grey field is covered with turquoise and teal flower heads joined by fine blue vines, and the colours stay cool from edge to edge.
The design up close
Rows of rosette flower heads in turquoise, teal and pale mint sit across the field in a staggered pattern. Some are full blooms with darker centres, while others are smaller buds, and fine blue vines and leaves run between them. Where the flower heads overlap, the turquoise and teal shift slightly, so the field keeps a little movement.
The grey ground of this blue grey overdyed rug is soft and carries faint streaks of lighter and darker tone, which suits an overdye rug with a worn, softened look.
A narrow outer border carries a repeating vine pattern in grey blue and teal, with a slightly wider band inside it. The border is tonal, so it does not compete with the field. The outer edge uses the same grey blue as the field, so the rug looks even from the edge to the centre.
Overdyeing and the wool
An overdyed rug starts from a base that is dyed again, which softens the colours and gives them a blended look. Overdyed rugs take on a softer, slightly faded look. A blue grey overdyed rug in this palette keeps its cool tones consistent from the centre to the border.
Wool is soft and resilient, which suits a rug with fine detail like this one. The flower heads are picked out in several shades, so the wool carries a lot of small variation across the field.
Sizing a blue grey overdyed rug for your living room
At 309 x 200 cm the rug covers about 6.2 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 45 cm of rug showing past each end, and two armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table. A rug this size suits a lounge where the whole seating group stands on it.
In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm with six chairs leaves roughly 65 cm at each end and 55 cm along each side. A blue and grey area rug like this one suits pale timber, grey walls and cool furnishings, and it gives a living room a calm base. The grey base suits timber and linen, where the turquoise flowers add the only bright note. Its large field makes it a good anchor for an open-plan space.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
