Blue Frame Overdyed Rug
This blue frame overdyed rug is laid out as a grid of square panels, each with its own small motif, inside a border of small flowers and leaves. It is hand double knotted wool and measures 380 x 300 cm, or about 11.4 square metres.
The design of this blue frame overdyed rug up close
The field is a grid of many small square panels set in rows and columns. Each panel holds a different motif, such as a diamond, a star, chevrons, a flower or a hooked leaf, so the grid reads as a patchwork of small designs rather than one repeated pattern.
Thin dark lines separate each panel from its neighbour, so every square is clearly framed. The slate tone of this blue frame overdyed rug keeps the motifs close in colour, and the framing lines do most of the work of defining each panel.
The border is a busy band of small flowers, leaves and rosettes in the same slate tone, edged by fine stripes. It frames the grid without competing with it. The border’s flowers and leaves are smaller than the panel motifs, so the grid remains the main feature.
How it is made
Our records note that this blue frame overdyed rug is hand double knotted. Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the finished rug was then over-dyed, which gives all the panels one shared tone. The panels therefore differ in their motifs but share a single over-dyed colour.
Turn the rug over and the knotting shows on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves.
Colour in your room
The slate blue-grey tone suits grey or cream walls and timber floors. Its cool colour works with simple, neutral furniture, so the grid stays the focus of the room. The colour of this blue frame overdyed rug also suits a bedroom with soft light. A room with black metal, glass or pale wood keeps the monochrome look sharp.
Sizing it for your room
At 380 x 300 cm, this blue frame overdyed rug covers about 11.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits on it with about 80 cm of rug showing past each end.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 70 cm of rug at each end and 100 cm along each side, so chairs can slide back without leaving the rug. Its area of about 11.4 square metres suits a large living room or a dining room where the table sits fully on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
