Blue Floral Kazak Rug
This blue floral Kazak rug was hand double knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 298 x 252 cm. Large medallions in teal blue and dusty mauve sit in a staggered pattern across a cream field, with sage leaves between them, so the rug reads as soft and pale overall.
The design up close
The medallions of this blue floral Kazak rug alternate in rows. Blue medallions sit at the top corners, the middle and the bottom corners, while dusty mauve medallions fill the spaces between them. Each has a pale centre with a small rosette, and its outline is cut into scallops.
Sage green leaves and tendrils curl between the medallions and round their corners, which joins the cream ground into one connected pattern. Blue is the strongest colour in the design, but the cream ground covers most of the field, so the rug looks lighter than its blue medallions alone would suggest.
The border is cream, with a repeated row of small blue and mauve palmettes and leaf sprays. Thin guard lines in grey and pink separate the border from the field.
Where Kazak rugs come from
Kazak rugs revive the bold, geometric designs first woven in the Caucasus. The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory.
In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs. This blue floral Kazak rug takes that medallion layout into a paler palette of cream, blue and mauve, which keeps the old design but softens the colour.
How this blue floral Kazak rug is made
This rug is hand double knotted, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom. Our records note vegetable dyes for this piece. Hand knotting is slow, one knot at a time, and a rug of this size is a long piece of work for the weaver.
A room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months, and this rug is large enough to count as one.
Sizing it for your room
At 298 x 252 cm this blue floral Kazak rug covers about 7.5 square metres, a size for a living room or a bedroom. A 2.2 m sofa set along the 298 cm length leaves about 39 cm of rug at each end. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, roughly 29 cm shows at each end and about 76 cm along each side.
A king bed, 183 cm wide in Australia, sits across the 252 cm width with about 35 cm of rug on each side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this blue floral Kazak rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
