Blue Cream Border Kazak Rug
This blue cream border Kazak rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in wool and measures 246 x 167 cm. A blue field carries a column of red and cream medallions inside a wide cream border with red and blue motifs. Our records note natural dyes.
The design up close
A red medallion with a cream centre sits at the middle of the blue field. Cream and navy diamond medallions stand above and below it, and red and orange medallions fill the corners. Small flowers and star shapes in red, cream and navy fill the spaces between them.
Across this blue cream border Kazak rug, the cream border frames the blue field, so the rug reads as a centre piece from across the room and as a detailed pattern up close. A narrow red band runs along the outer edge. Light falling across the pile changes how deep the blue looks, so the rug shifts a little through the day.
Where Kazak designs come from
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. Weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs in recent decades, and this blue cream border Kazak rug follows the same medallion layout.
How it is made
Our Kazak rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan. This blue cream border Kazak rug was tied by hand on a loom, knot by knot, and the pile was then sheared level.
The design shows clearly on the back, with the slight irregularities that handwork leaves. Wool gives the pile its body and lets the colours sit clearly on the surface.
Sizing your blue cream border Kazak rug
At 246 by 167 cm, the rug covers about 4.1 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m with its front legs on the rug leaves about 13 cm of rug past each end. Armchairs facing the sofa can also stand with their front legs on the rug, which gives the seating group one shared base. Before you decide, mark the rug’s outline on the floor with masking tape, and walk around it to see how it sits in the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
