Black Kashmiri Rug
This black Kashmiri rug is a tribal and traditional design, made in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool and measuring 122 x 78 cm. Five diamond medallions sit down a black field, surrounded by cream, tan and brown geometric bands.
The design up close
The black field of this black Kashmiri rug holds five diamond medallions stacked down the centre. Each one is tan and cream with a small dark centre, and tan and cream triangles run in from both sides between them. Along the edges the pattern steps in and out, which gives the field a steady rhythm from top to bottom. Each medallion repeats the same tan and cream colouring, so the five read together as one repeated motif.
The border is a set of cream, tan and brown bands with small geometric figures in rows. Two narrow bands run across each short end, and the whole rug is framed by a dark outer edge.
Looking down the rug, the diamonds line up on the centre line and the triangles on each side repeat in tan and cream, so the black field reads as one steady column.
A long weaving tradition
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition. Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs, with a heavier, more relaxed feel.
This rug is in our tribal range, where a strong pattern on a dark ground stands out.
Our Afghan tribal rugs range from bold geometric designs to calm pieces, and this rug sits with the bold end of that range.
How it is made
This black Kashmiri rug is hand knotted, so the design shows clearly on the back, with slight irregularities where each knot was tied by hand.
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and this rug is made from lamb’s wool.
The pile is tied knot by knot, so the surface feels firm underfoot.
Sizing a black Kashmiri rug
At 122 x 78 cm the rug covers about 1.0 square metre. It is a practical size for a hallway corner, an entrance or the side of a bed.
Thick wool and patterned fields hide everyday wear, so a black Kashmiri rug holds up well in busy spots like entrances and hallways.
It is shorter than a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, so it sits best under a coffee table or beside a bed, where its black field can anchor the floor. In a bedroom it can sit beside a bed, where the black field is easy to see when you step out in the morning.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
