Beige Vintage Overdyed Rug
This beige vintage overdyed rug was hand knotted in Iran from lamb’s wool and measures 407 x 304 cm. A large charcoal-grey medallion sits on a muted field, framed by a cream and gold border of close floral scrolls. Overall the rug is soft and greyed in tone, with almost no bright colour.
The design up close
The medallion is the focus of this beige vintage overdyed rug. It has a pale, lobed outline with feathered points at the top and bottom and a cloud-like centre, and it sits on a field that has faded to dark grey, with lighter patches showing through. The corners are lighter, with pale scrolls running into the border.
The border is the widest part of the design. Its outer band repeats cream and gold floral scrolls, and a narrow line separates it from a second band of the same colours. Around the medallion a paler border of lobed shapes separates the centre from the field.
The surface shows uneven wear. Lighter and darker patches run across the grey field, and the lines of the medallion look softened in places. The palette is so muted that the pattern is easiest to read from across the room.
The medallion is the part of the design that reads from a distance, so place the rug where it can be seen from the doorway. The muted palette lets the rug act as a neutral centrepiece, with the furniture and art taking the lead in colour.
Persian rugs and how they are woven
A Persian rug is woven in Iran, and every rug in our Persian collection is hand knotted there. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months. This beige vintage overdyed rug is one of our vintage rugs.
Lamb’s wool and the pile
The pile of this beige vintage overdyed rug is lamb’s wool. Lamb’s wool comes from a young sheep’s first shearing and gives the pile a soft hand. Each knot is tied by hand, and the pile is then sheared to an even height.
Sizing a beige vintage overdyed rug
At 407 x 304 cm the rug covers about 12.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves about 94 cm of rug showing past each end, so the whole sofa and a pair of armchairs can sit on it around a coffee table. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 84 cm of rug at each end and 102 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back. Its muted tones suit a large room with pale walls and grey or cream furnishings.
Looking after your beige vintage overdyed rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
