Beige Gazney Rug
This beige Gazney rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan in wool and measures 214 x 157 cm. A soft beige field carries large floral medallions, and a grey taupe border holds rows of rosettes and leafy scrolls.
The design up close
Two large rosettes sit side by side across the middle of the field, with smaller rosettes above and below them and small flowers between. Fine vine-like stems curve through the field, drawn in soft grey-green and taupe.
The border is a wide band with big rosettes at intervals and leafy scrolls between them. The colours are muted throughout, so this beige Gazney rug shows its pattern as low contrast detail rather than bold shapes.
Soft beige and taupe tones suit a room with neutral walls and timber floors, and the rug sits easily with neutral furniture.
Afghan rugs and their weaving
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and the Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time.
This beige Gazney rug sits towards the calmer end of that range, with its soft palette and floral layout.
How a beige Gazney rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand, and the rug is double knotted, so the design is built up row by row and shows on the back as well as the front. Our records note natural dyes, and the beige and grey tones are soft rather than strong.
Sizing it for your room
At 214 x 157 cm this beige Gazney rug covers about 3.4 square metres, a generous size for a living room. Its length is close to that of a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m, so set the sofa’s front legs on the rug and let the armchairs sit on it too.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm it leaves about 17 cm at each end and about 34 cm along each side, so chairs at the ends would sit partly off the rug when pulled out. A lounge suits this rug better than a dining room.
At the foot of a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide, a rug of this length would show about 30 cm on each side, so it can sit across the foot of the bed with room to spare. Its soft beige and taupe tones suit a bedroom with pale linen and timber furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this beige Gazney rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
