Beige Floral Gazney Rug
This beige floral Gazney rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in Gazney wool and measures 204 x 150 cm. Its soft beige ground carries large floral medallions and fine vines in sage green, rust and taupe. Our records note natural dyes.
The design of this beige floral Gazney rug
Large floral medallions in peach, rust and sage sit in columns down the field. Each one is a rounded shape with curled petals, and fine vines in sage and taupe trail between them. Each medallion sits in its own space, with the ground showing around it, so the floral shapes stay clear. The vines in the top and bottom sections form loose loops, and they cross one another where the ground shows through.
On this beige floral Gazney rug, the border is a wide band of scrolling leaves in sage, rust and taupe on the same pale ground. The tones are muted, so the rug stays soft in a room rather than drawing the eye.
Small leaf shapes in rust sit where the vines meet, which adds a little warmth to the cream ground. From a distance the rug reads as one soft, layered pattern. Near the centre, the peach and rust medallions are the warmest colours on the rug, and the sage vines cool them down.
Where Afghan rugs come from
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and Afghan rugs range from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and this beige floral Gazney rug sits within that tradition, with its soft palette and floral vines.
How it is made
This beige floral Gazney rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan in Gazney wool, and our records note natural dyes. The open ground around each motif lets the pattern show clearly in daylight. Its cream ground and muted floral palette suit a room with timber floors. The border’s leaves are sage, rust and taupe, the same three colours as the vines.
Sizing it for your room
At 204 x 150 cm this beige floral Gazney rug covers about 3.1 square metres. It suits a seating group, with the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs resting on it around a coffee table. It also suits a bedroom, where the pale ground lightens timber floors and warm walls. Beside a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide in Australia, its 204 cm length runs along the side of the mattress. The rust leaves in the border pick up warm tones from a timber floor.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
