Ardebil Persian Runner
This Ardebil Persian runner was hand double knotted in Iran in wool and measures 325 x 100 cm. Its navy ground carries panels of rust red, olive and cream, filled with birds and small animals. It is a runner, so it works best where people walk along its length.
The design up close
Inside the red panels, large cream birds with navy detail sit beside smaller blue birds. Olive panels in the next band hold red and orange birds, so the colours alternate along the length. Between the panels, white and red stepped motifs form sharp zigzags, and small animals move along the edges of the field.
Across this Ardebil Persian runner, a red border of small geometric motifs frames the navy field. Its red matches the panels, so the border reads as part of the design rather than a separate frame.
How it is made
Each knot in this Ardebil Persian runner was tied by hand on a loom, then the pile was trimmed level. Hand double knotting means each knot is wrapped around a pair of warp threads and tied twice, which makes a firm surface that keeps its shape. On a hand knotted rug the design shows clearly on the back, with small irregularities where each knot was tied.
Wool gives the pile a soft hand. Because the design is built knot by knot, the outlines of the birds and panels stay crisp where two colours meet.
Where a runner works best
This Ardebil Persian runner suits a hallway, a kitchen galley or the floor beside a bed. For a hallway, the floor should be about 120 to 140 cm wide, which is the runner width plus 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side. Lay it where the timber or tiles run straight, and keep doorways clear so the runner does not catch under a swinging door.
Sizing your Ardebil Persian Runner
At 325 cm long, the runner is about 3.25 m, enough to run past a console table or a bench without covering the whole floor. Leave a clear margin of timber or tiles at each end so people can step off it easily. Its 100 cm width suits a single passage and sits best where the rest of the floor is plain, so the birds and panels can be seen.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
See it before you buy
Colours look different under shop lights, daylight and lamplight, so the showroom is the best place to judge the navy and the reds.
