Aqua Vintage Kerman Rug
This aqua vintage Kerman rug is hand double knotted in wool and measures 403 x 292 cm. The field is a light aqua with small, faded motifs in tan and gold scattered across it, and a wide navy border carries cream floral scrolls. The aqua is an over-dye, applied over the rug’s original colours.
The design up close
The aqua ground is covered with small motifs in tan, gold and ivory: little flowers, leaves and dots set in rows that run the length of the rug. Between them the ground shows through in plain aqua, so the pattern reads as fine texture rather than solid shapes.
A thin cream band frames the field. Beyond it, the navy border holds a continuous vine of cream and pale blue flowers and rosettes, with a narrow cream guard at the outer edge. The navy is the darkest tone on the rug, and it sets off the aqua centre. The navy stays deep and even against the faded aqua, so the border holds the edges of the rug together.
The surface is mottled, with lighter and darker patches and fine speckling across the field. Marks like these are common in vintage rugs, and here they give the rug its aged look.
How an aqua vintage Kerman rug is made
Our records note hand double knotting in wool, and each knot is tied by hand on a loom. The aqua is an over-dye, so the rug was coloured again on top of its original tones. Vintage rugs of this kind keep a soft, rustic feel, which suits relaxed rooms.
Colour in your room
An aqua vintage Kerman rug suits rooms with cream walls, timber floors and white or grey furnishings. The navy border gives the edges weight, while the aqua centre keeps the room light. Brass or warm wood pieces sit well beside the cool aqua. The cream band and the navy border sit together without competing with the aqua centre.
Sizing it for your room
At 403 x 292 cm this aqua vintage Kerman rug covers about 11.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 91.5 cm of rug showing past each end, and two armchairs can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves about 81.5 cm at each end and 96 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back. In a larger lounge, the rug can hold a sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table together. A rug of this size needs some clear floor around it, so the aqua field and navy border can be seen from the doorway.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
